Architecture
The hotel building, completed in 1976, was designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, whose most famous work is the Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, carved into the bedrock.
The architectural brothers’ design work was aimed at capturing the contrast between the site’s characteristic bedrock and the delicate nature surrounding it. At Hotel Mesikämmen, the visitor really steps “inside” nature. Along the main corridor of the hotel, the bedrock and concrete structures are left exposed. The stiff natural stone surface shows the vitality of the stone. From the outside, the hotel’s airy wooden structures blend in with the surrounding nature. The architects’ emphasis on closeness to nature, free forms and structural solutions is evident throughout the hotel building.
Gym
The gym is open from 9am to 8pm. Use of the gym is included in the room rate for hotel guests. In addition to the basic equipment, the gym also has three spinning bikes. There is also direct access from the gym to the nature trail “Nallenpolku” for a start or end of workout.
During summer months you can book the tennis court for your private use for a small fee, it is located just next to the hotel. There is also a padel-court for rent about 500m from the hotel next to Sauna-restaurant Kiulu and a full golf course next to us in Golf Ähtäri. If you enjoy winter sports the trails and cross country skiing routes leaving from our hotel are in great shape.
Chappel
This beautiful chappel is actually the oldest building in Ähtäri that was used originally as a home to a priest. It was built in 1772.
Now it is used for small weddings, and other ceremonies or music events. It seats 70 people, so it is perfect for intimate gatherings. Truly a unique surrounding! If you’d like to see the Chappel from inside, you can ask for the key at the hotel reception.
